E-3, R-3 and Ranger 3 along with ARS and the Virginia Department of Forestry was dispatched to a wildland fire at 4:30 pm in Inman just above Inman Village. Chief 3 was first on scene and assumed command. An initial staging area was set up on Church Town rd. just below the fire area. During the initial size up of the fire the Virginia Department of Forestry was initiated by Command. Ranger 3 was put into service quickly to protect natural gas wells directly in the fire's path. After the gas wells were protected AFD Ranger 3 crew was assigned to assist the VDOF on helping the dozer put in a fire line from the top of the mountain. As the fire progressed strong winds pushed the fire down the mountain toward Inman Village. E-3 and R-3 were reassigned to this location to help with exposure protection. As the fire continued to burn during the night Rescue 3 and Ranger 3 were reassigned back to Church Town Rd. to monitor the fire as it progressed down the mountain toward homes. At around 1:30 am some of the AFD crews were released to go home after a long night. The second AFD crews left around 2:45 am. AFD Command was terminated at 4:00 am.... This made for a long night for AFD Firefighters and the VDOF.... Good job to all.
